Why Take An Australia Cruise?

By John Metcalfe

Australia is a country of amazing diversity and awe- inspiring beauty. From grand cities to ancient coral reefs, there is no end of star attractions in the land of Oz; and the best way to see them is to book yourself on an Australia cruise.

Sydney and its world famous harbor is a good starting point for an Australia cruise, although it is of course possible to start at other Australian ports, and also at ports outside of Australia. For instance, you could join the US to Australia leg of a round-the-world cruise at Los Angeles and find yourself in Sydney, Australia 30-days later. From Sydney you could depart on a smaller cruise around Australia and/or New Zealand.

Cruise routes around Australia normally concentrate on port stops along the East and North coasts. Brisbane, the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns, Port Douglas, Townsville and Darwin are the main ports of call, with cruise durations typically of between 7-10 days. From Darwin, a few cruise lines offer services westwards towards Broome. Cruises along the southern and western coasts are less popular. Here, the main ports of call are Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. A port stop in Tasmania is also incorporated into many an Australia cruise, as are ports of call in New Zealand, such as Auckland and Dunedin, and sometimes ports of call in Indonesia.

So, what great treasures await those who adventure to Australia on a cruise? Sydney, Australia's capital and the jewel in the crown of Australia's south-east coastline, offers a whole host of sightseeing opportunities just on its own. Sydney harbor, the Opera House, Bondi Beach and Watson's Bay are among the top attractions. Sydney is also bursting with museums, fine restaurants and excellent shopping facilities. Two hours outside of Sydney is the world renowned Hunter Valley wine region, where you can sample some of Australia's finest wines.

Further to the North, the Gold Coast - one of the world's hottest surfing locations - and the city of Brisbane await. In Brisbane you will have many shore excursions to choose from, including boat trips up the Brisbane River and a bushwalking experience in Brisbane district's forests.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia's main attractions. You can dive the reef to experience its full glory, join a snorkeling tour of the reef or see the reef from the air. There are also opportunities for landward adventures into the great Australian outback.

Cairns offers a further experience with the Great Barrier Reef, as well as beautiful sandy beaches, while Darwin - one of the hottest coastal regions in Australia during the summer - is another great place in which to relax under the hot Australian sun.

Fans can already score accommodation in Germany after socceroos score win against Uruguay

From Accor Hotels

From 150:1 odds to 50:1, Australia are now odds-on favourites (at least at home) to win the World Cup in Germany next year and Aussies wishing to follow their team can now book their accommodation for 2006 thanks to the World Cup Accommodation Service (WACS) online booking system.

Branded NewsletterLast night’s 4-2 victory against Uruguay means that Australia will compete in the soccer World Cup for the first time since 1974. Interestingly, Germany seems a lucky charm for the Aussies, as the last time we made the World Cup it was also played there. Then, in ’74, Australia came 14th but fans are expecting a much better performance from the Aussies this time around.

The team says the roar of the crowd made all the difference last night, so they are encouraging Australians to head overseas to cheer them through to victory in 2006.

WCAS will use technology similar to the successful Mondiresa system set up by Accor and its partners to manage accommodation for the 1998 World Cup in Paris, which ensures planning reliability for tour operators, partners, suppliers and fans. Mondiresa will again be used for the 2007 World Cup in France.

World Cup Accommodation Services (WCAS) makes it possible to securely book accommodation at more than 550 participating hotels in Germany during the World Cup through one website.

The WCAS system guarantees fair rates and simple bookings no matter what team the fan elects to follow and allows travellers to book accommodation in any of the 12 venues being used for the World Cup.

For a project of this magnitude, FIFA has developed a joint venture including Accor Hotels Germany GmbH, Euro Lloyd Reiseburo GmbH & Co KG and the British company Byrom plc, all of whom have wide-ranging experience in organising major world-class sports events.

The WCAS system will provide access to a wide range of hotels from two stars to five stars, all of which are close to official venues. The system will book more than 1.5 million room nights, with 550 hotels to choose from.

With just a few clicks on www.fifaworldcup.com it is possible to guarantee accommodation bookings even at this stage. You simply specify which team you want to follow and what time period you would like to be in Germany. The World Cup runs from 9 June to 9 July 2006.

Bookings are available in three-night options around each group match, as well as 12-night stays for all match days during the Group match phase. Bookings can also be made for the quarterfinals and semi-finals.

Should your team be eliminated, you will not lose your booking but will automatically follow the winner of that group.

Rates for all WCAS hotels are guaranteed and there can be no increase in rates after the final draw in December. To guard against price gouging, rates are based on room prices for the year 2003 plus an inflation rate of two per cent per annum.

“We, as sole provider of such a programme in the tourism industry, are happy to offer organisers and fans attractive rates and guaranteed accommodation for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany,” said Thomas Edelkamp, Managing Director of the WCAS.

“We will use this mega event to position Germany as a tourist destination throughout the world on a long-term basis.”
Immigration To The United Kingdom

By Liron Rose

The United Kingdom offers a large selection of Immigration Visas, Residency and work permits, some of which lead ultimately to Permanent residency (Indefinite leave to remain), a British Citizenship and a UK Passport.

Highly Skilled Migrant Program (HSMP)
One of the most popular ways of settling in the UK is through the Highly Skilled Migrant Program, quite a new program which was designed to compete with similar programs in other countries. This program, which is based on a points system, enables the Visa holder to enter the UK without a job offer or sponsorship, and effectively work for any employer in the UK.

Work Permit Visa

If you have a job offer from a UK based employer, you should apply for a sponsored work permit. You should bear in mind that this work permit will be valid only for 5 years for this specific employer only. Living in the UK on such a visa is counted towards the requirements for permanent residency.

Working Holiday Visa

If you are under 30, and a citizen of a Commonwealth (former British Empire) country you are probably eligible for a Working Holiday Visa. Such Visa enables you to legally work in the UK for 2 years.

Permanent Residency & Citizenship
Once you obtained a HSMP Visa or a Work Permit Visa, you are eligible to have your spouse and children live in the UK with you. After several years of legal residency, you would be able to apply for a UK Citizenship and Passport.
Cruising can reveal the biggest continents with the lengthiest coastlines and the highest mountains of the world. To explore the true majesty of our world and its magnificent past, to experience the magnanimity of its religions and its peoples, embark on a cruise. You will never ever forget the experience.

Of all the cruises that I have been on, I liked the Asia cruise because it takes you to Singapore & Hong Kong. It was definitely worth a look. The temples in Thailand , the temples of India , or the peaceful eyes of Buddha, redefine spiritual faith of the believers and non-believers. Native women display graceful dance forms of India , the Japanese tea ceremony and the Chinese theatre. All of these wonders have enormous cultural significance that are and integral part of the region's tradition. It is a pleasure to be a spectator of such enormous cultural and traditional environment intermingles with every walk of life, so alike to each other yet so very regional in its own right.

The Asia cruise takes the traveler along the Malaysian, Vietnamese and the Thai seas. Splurge on pretty gifts from the fabulous shopping arcades of Singapore and Hong Kong . Take time to spoil yourself in Dubai . Be a part of a once in a lifetime shopping experience with discounts and promotional offers like you have never seen. Come to Bollywood, know what family entertainment can be found and enjoyed by watching a Hindi film.

Your Asia cruise can be a channel and opportunity to explore the cultures and land masses with their own unique spirit and expression. You can go on an Asia cruise to suit your own needs whether it is Far East or the southern pacific. Every cruise has its mystique and its own story to unfold.

After you have chosen your cruise, you should expect elegance and no gimmicks. You can enjoy your vacation at your own pace as if you were still at home but better. If you like solitary experiences then you can jog unmolested, swim a lap in warm pools or read a great book. You should, however, take part in some of the free activities. Join the exercise classes, get a soothing massage, and enjoy a relaxing sauna.

Some cruises offer aerial sightseeing, white water rafting, and hikes amongst other things. You can find spas, health clubs and even wedding chapels on your cruise ship.Children have special play areas or centers with lots of fun and entertainment. The cruise agency often invite at least one guest speaker to share their experiences about the region you are traveling through giving you funny and sometimes curious insights. Most of the cruise staff provides excellent service and all guests get first class attention.

The dedicated staff looks after you very well and is there at your beckoned call. You can find the vital information you need from the staff and other places on board about where to find souvenirs, to shop for local handicrafts, or nice restaurants that are sure to delight and amaze you.

Asian cruises have exotic entertainment billings that showcase authentic entertainment and special theme events, hilarious comedies, and regional musicals. The exquisite dance performances will most assuredly leave you spell bound.

Spellbound and mesmerized will be the mood for you when your cruise journey ends.
Conquering My Fear Of Flying

By Heather Peters

I admit it, I am afraid to fly. And I'm not alone, as many as 1 in 6 adults has at least some fears about flying. For me it's definitely not a rational fear. In fact all my analytical and logical skills fly right out the window whenever I think about getting on a commercial plane. The most amazing part is that I grew up flying. My father owns a small plane and we would go flying every weekend.

In my preteen years I had an aborted takeoff during a commercial flight and while it didn't scare me at all during the event, when I later found out that it had made the local news I began to see that this was perhaps a bigger deal (it really wasn't but I was a preteen after all). I also began to recognize my own mortality and realized that I am a control freak and don't enjoy the thought of putting my life in the hands of pilots I don't know.

However, I'm gradually working my way out of my fears and back into a state of mind that is not afraid. It's taking me a lot of time, but I make progress everyday.

My first technique is to get a large inside picture of a commercial plane (preferably one that I'll be flying in soon) and make it the background image of my computer desktop. This way, every time I get on my computer I'm looking toward the front of an airplane as if I am a passenger. Initially this worked so well my pulse would race and my breathing rate went up. I've now conditioned myself to seeing that image so it no longer bothers me.

I also like to watch internet videos of planes taking off and landing. My favorite videos are those that are taken from inside the plane, looking out the window at the wing; hearing the roar of the engines and seeing the ground fall away beneath the plane as it rises upon takeoff. Sitting in my recliner with headphones on and watching those videos enables me to participate in a takeoff without actually being on the plane. I can condition myself to the sights and sounds I would normally experience.

I've found several helpful online courses designed to give information to fearful flyers. I use them a lot as I get closer to departure, and I've bought every book I can find about conquering one's fear of flying. I take them with me, I read them often.

I don't watch news clips or specials about airplane crashes. The media sensationalizes airplane crashes simply because they happen so rarely. That also means they repeat that horrific story over and over, scaring the wits out of unsuspecting people.

There are dozens of helpful statistics about the safety of air travel; The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) says your chances of being in a fatal plane crash are anywhere from 1 in 400,000 to 1 in 10 million depending on the airline you're flying. To someone who has a genuine fear of flying those numbers don't mean anything when you're locked in a steel tube with no way of setting foot on the ground until AFTER you've gone through takeoff, landing and turbulence.

I recognize that I need help and am trying to look at air travel from a logical perspective again. Each trip I hope to get a little better. If you are suffering from a similar fear, I encourage you to go through the various online resources available and seek additional professional help if your fears are strong enough and you are unable to get through them on your own. It's ok. We can get through this and learn to enjoy (or at least tolerate) this means of travel in order to take that awesome vacation, see family or fulfill the requirements of a great job.
Cambodia - The Blind Masseuses

By Rick Chapo

Cambodia has seen far more than its fair share of tragedy and misery. The blind masseuses offer a glimpse of the true Cambodian heart and will to carry on.

Seeing Hands Massage
With the onset of the genocidal rule of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia took a serious turn for the worse from the late 1970s through the early eighties. When the Khmer Rouge were finished killing or starving as much as twenty percent of the population and finally thrown out of power, the land turned into a lawless morass with all that implies. During this time, numerous people were left disabled. A particularly significant disability was blindness, which arose from torture or muggings undertaken by throwing battery acid in the face of victims.

As the country recovers, a unique and heartening development has occurred with Cambodians that are blind. The Association for the Blind in Cambodia, along with international backers, has been training the blind to be masseuses. Their motto is, "The blind can see with there hands."

Members of the association travel the country to find potential masseuses. The individuals are then trained until they are masters of the art of massage. The Association has even gone one step further. In Sihanoukville, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, the Association for the Blind has opened massage businesses known as "Seeing Hands," which solely employee the blind masseuses.

I heartily and enthusiastically recommend you get a massage at Seeing Hands if you're traveling in Cambodia. Driving anywhere in Cambodia is a bone jarring experience. There is no better way to get out the knots than one of these massages. The masseuses are friendly and seem to be able to find every little knot. I guarantee you'll feel like a new man or woman after getting one.

Each Seeing Hands location has slightly different prices, but all are cheap as is typical for Cambodia. You can expect to spend between three to five dollars for the best one-hour massage you've ever had.

On top of it, you'll feel good to know you're helping people help themselves. In fact, many of the masseuses make more money a month than people who can see!
Singapore

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Republic of Singapore (Simplified Chinese: Pinyin: Xīnjiāpō Gònghéguó, Malay: Republik Singapura; Tamil: சிங்கப்பூர் குடியரசு), is an island city-state in Southeast Asia, situated on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, south of the Malaysian state of Johor and north of the Indonesian Riau Islands. Its coordinates are 1°17.583′ N 103°51.333′ E, just 137 km north of the Equator. The name Singapore was derived from Malay word singa (lion), which itself is derived from the Sanskrit word सिंह siMha of the same meaning, and the Sanskrit word पुर pura (city).

Established as a trading port by the British in the early 19th century, Singapore became a centre of British influence in Southeast Asia. Upon achieving independence from Malaysia in 1965, Singapore rapidly developed into a successful free-market economy with one of the highest per capita gross domestic products in the world, and is a major finance and transport hub in the region. Singapore has a low crime rate and has been consistently rated by Transparency International as one of the least corrupt countries in the world.

Practices such as the ban of imports of chewing gum and heavy fines for littering, spitting, and not flushing in public toilets have led some to label Singapore a "nanny state". National service in Singapore is mandatory for all male citizens and male children of permanent residents. Even though it has not been engaged in any military conflict, the Singapore Armed Forces maintains a 100,000-strong active force and 350,000-strong reserve force. Singapore has relatively warm relations with Malaysia especially since the recent changes of leadership in both countries. However, disputes still exist over issues such as the sale of water and territorial claims over Pedra Branca.

Holland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Holland is a region in the central-western part of the Netherlands. Holland is a former county of the Holy Roman Empire, ruled by the Counts of Holland, and later the leading member of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden, 1581–1795).

The area is today divided between two provinces of the Netherlands: North Holland (Noord-Holland) and South Holland (Zuid-Holland) that were created in 1840. A few regions that were historically Hollandic became part of other provinces as a result of reforms during the French occupation (1795-1813): Willemstad and surroundings, Biesbosch and the Land of Altena became part of North Brabant. In 1940, after the German occupation of the Netherlands, the islands of Vlieland and Terschelling went to Friesland. This was not changed back after World War II. In 1950, the island of Urk went to Overijssel (in 1986 to Flevoland). More recent territorial changes are the transfer of Oudewater, Woerden and Vianen from South Holland to the province of Utrecht, in 1970, 1989 and 2002 respectively.

The name Holland in this and the other entries on this page ultimately stem from holt land ("wooded land"). A popular, but incorrect, fake etymology holds that it is derived from hol land ("hollow land"), inspired by the low-lying geography of both the Dutch and the English region (Holland, Lincolnshire).

The province of Holland was the cultural, political and economic center of the United Provinces. The greatest cities of the provinces were located within the province of Holland such as Amsterdam (the capital), Rotterdam, Leiden, the Hague (the seat of government), Delft and Haarlem. From the great port cities of Holland, Dutch merchants sailed to and from destinations all over Europe, and merchants from all over Europe gathered to trade in the warehouses of Amsterdam and other trading cities of Holland. As a result, many Europeans heard of the United Provinces first as "Holland" rather than "Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands". This tradition continues to this day.

Thus, even though it is officially incorrect, the word Holland is often used by both Dutch (speaking) and foreign people to denote the entire Netherlands, possibly because "The Netherlands" ("Nederland" in Dutch) is more cumbersome. (Further trouble is caused when referring to Holland in Greek, as The Netherlands are there called Ολλανδια (Ollandia), which is also the Greek name for Holland). People from the other provinces of the Netherlands (such as Friesland, Groningen, North Brabant, Zeeland etc.) are often offended when referred to as "Hollanders".

For a short time (1806–1810), however, there was the Napoleonic Kingdom of Holland, which did encompass large parts of the Netherlands.
